Your local plumber may well have a lot more to offer than you realize; if you live rurally or in a small town you may have one local plumber capable of doing any plumbing job including water, drains, gas and even lead-work. If you live in a bigger town or city you may well have a wide choice of plumbers many with specializations: such as plumbing contractors for new builds and renovations, emergency plumbers who will come out 24 hours a day 7 days a week and those who just do heating, gas, water or drains.
Drains is perhaps the one that is actually most likely to be specialized: there is a lot of specialist equipment including high pressure vacuums. To be a drain specialist you don’t actually have to have a plumbing qualification to just unblock them. You may well want to call out a qualified plumber though who can not only unblock but also replace sections and even completely overhaul your drains. Drains often block because of their design: horizontal pipes, thin pipes and pipes that are simply too old may cause problems and can be replaced with modern pipes which are modular meaning easy to maintain and which have access points.
Plumbers who offer basic water services still do much more than simply fitting new taps and fixing leaking pipes: they can of course add new pipes: both due to them being old and in disrepair, or maybe pipes are too thin causing low water pressure. Plumbers can also increase water pressure by fitting pumps to draw water in for your home: if you live rurally or suffer from low water pressure for other reasons such as being on a housing development with an insufficient pumping station: low water pressure can be a major pain. Plumbers dealing with water can also often install bathrooms and kitchens: often they will do the entire job to save you having to bring in one decorator and a plumber separately.
Though you could try your hand at plumbing with water pipes when it comes to gas and heating you really do not want to try as one mistake could be deadly: the release or natural gas itself or carbon monoxide gas can both kill with little warning so use a plumber qualified in gas and heating. Gas may escape from pipes quickly, perhaps while you are out of the house it may be that you cause a spark as you return and open the door and cause an explosion. With carbon monoxide ventilation is vital: make sure you have your boiler regularly serviced; even when not working on the boiler directly think about how your actions such as blocking or rerouting a flue: which may affect ventilation to the boiler. Carbon Monoxide gives even less warning than Natural Gas as it is odorless so always get a qualified plumber to do work on your boiler. A plumber can also of course improve the efficiency of your heating: it may well be that your radiators are full of sediment and need draining and flushing, older radiators may also need to be replaced with modern radiators with a bigger surface area allowing them to radiate more heat and keep you warmer during the cold winter months.
