Many people think of plumbers as fixing dripping faucets and little else but this is of course a limited view of what plumbers can do and how much skill and knowledge they have. Many people who have tried plumbing jobs will have found that working with water and gas can be difficult let alone dangerous. For both gas and water work then a qualified plumber is what you need, in some cases with gas you may have no option based on local building regulations. Both water and gas can kill though so even with water don’t take risks. Leaking water can slowly damage your home, perhaps causing beams to rot or it can mix with electricity with tragic consequences. If water suddenly starts leaking and can’t be stopped it can in fact ruin your home and many of your possessions. A qualified plumber should install all of your fresh water piping and do work on repairs as well. Gas is even more dangerous than water and how volatile it is shouldn’t be forgotten, a small spark of static from a carpet can be enough to cause a gas explosion so don’t assume that as long as you don’t have any naked flames around you will be safe.
What tragically far more people don’t realize is that the biggest danger of gas is in fact carbon monoxide an odorless and silent killer caused by poor ventilation. It is not worth guessing at what level of ventilation you need for a gas appliance so do get a plumber qualified to deal with gas to install appliances and to service them annually. An annual service will including making sure that ventilation hasn’t become blocked. A plumber with the right qualifications can also work on your entire central heating system, for example increasing the efficiency of your existing radiators or installing new modern radiators. Often your current radiators you are thinking about replacing will be sufficient if they are flushed out or in some cases it may be moving them to a better place that is needed: perhaps away from windows and doors where heat will be instantly lost. In other cases your plumber may recommend that you actually change your boiler if it is in fact this that is insufficient. You may on the other hand decide to have under floor heating installed which distributes heat more evenly and efficiently as the heat naturally rises warming an entire room.
Drainage is often thought of separately to plumbing for fresh water and some plumbers specialize in drainage. It is indeed important to use a qualified plumber with drainage as well as with other plumbing. If fresh water leaks into your home it may take some work to dry the place out and some things may be damaged. If you end up with waste water or even sewage leaking into your home you may never get rid of the smell and many more of your possessions may be ruined. A plumber should be used to maintain and unblock drains as well or even to deal with smelling drains. As well as being able to unblock drains they should be able to track down the problem causing the blockage or smell and replace pipes or do other work needed to stop the problem coming back. Often where you can smell drains you also have the potential for drains to back up easily as it may be out of date or simply poor plumbing causing the problem.
